Commercial access control: plan the whole door, not just the reader

A reader is only one part of an access control system. The door, frame, lock, credentials, controller, software, and operating procedures all need to work together. Start with how your property operates before selecting equipment.

Define who needs access

  • List employees, tenants, visitors, contractors, and delivery personnel.
  • Identify the doors each group needs and the permitted days and hours.
  • Decide who approves access and who removes it when a person leaves.
  • Document recurring problems such as shared credentials, doors left open, or difficult visitor handoffs.

Review the complete opening

Have the door condition, frame, existing hardware, power, cabling, network, and release requirements reviewed together. An equipment recommendation should follow a site assessment. Different doors and building uses can require different solutions; a product label alone does not establish that it is suitable for a particular opening.

Connect events to useful information

Where supported, related camera views can help authorized staff investigate a door event. Define which events need attention, who receives the notification, and how they should respond. Confirm platform compatibility and licensing before assuming cameras, alarms, and access software can exchange information.

Plan everyday administration

Include credential enrollment, lost-credential handling, staff training, event retention, and support ownership in the project scope. Agree on expected behavior during power or network interruptions and have the installer demonstrate it during handover.
