Smart home compatibility checklist: cameras, locks, thermostats, and connected devices

A connected home is easier to manage when each device has a clear purpose and works with the systems you already use. Before buying cameras, smart locks, thermostats, or other connected devices, check the exact models and the integrations you need.

Define the outcome first

Write down what you want to do: see a visitor, grant temporary entry, adjust comfort settings, or receive a useful notification. Separate essential functions from conveniences. A device appearing in the same app does not necessarily mean every feature can work together.

Check these items before purchasing

  • Compatibility: exact model, supported platform, required hub, and available integration.
  • Connection: network coverage at the installation location and any internet dependency.
  • Power and installation: mounting, wiring, batteries, and the professional work required.
  • Ownership: which household account owns the device and how access is shared or removed.
  • Costs: equipment, installation, optional subscriptions, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Interruptions: how essential functions behave if internet, power, or a cloud service is unavailable.

Keep control of your accounts

Use the manufacturer's supported setup process and available account protections. Keep recovery information private and avoid sharing one password among household members when individual access is supported. Review old users and linked accounts when replacing a device or moving.

Agree on the handover

Ask for a demonstration of everyday operation, notifications, access sharing, and basic maintenance. For thermostats and other equipment connected to building systems, have a qualified professional verify compatibility and installation requirements before wiring changes.
